Introduction




The University of Birmingham is a public research university located in Edgbaston,Birmingham,United Kingdom. It received its royal charter in 1900 as a successor to Queen's College, Birmingham 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Mason Science College making it the first English civic or 'red brick' university to recieve its own royal charter. It is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and the international network of research universities,Universitas 21

The university was ranked 14thin the UK and 79thin the world in the QS World University Rankings for 2019. In 2013, Birmingham was named 'University of the year 2014' in the Times Higher Education awards. The 2017 Global Employability University Ranking places Birmingham at 142nd worldwide and 10th in the UK.Birmingham is also ranked 5thin the UK for Graduate Prospects in the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

The student population includes 22,440 undergraduate and 12,395 postgraduate students, which is the fourth largest in the UK.The annual income of the institution for 2016-17 was $635.6 million of which $124.0 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of $597.3 million.

The university is home to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, housing works by Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet, the Shakespeare Institute, the Cadbury Research Library home to the Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern manuscripts,the Lapworth Museum of Geology, and the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower,which is a prominent landmark visible from many parts of the city. Academics and alumni of the university include former British Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain, and Stanley Baldwin,the british composer Sir Edward Elgar and eleven Nobel Laureates.

The Times University Guide awarded the University of Birmingham the 'University of the Year' award in 2014 and the 'University of the year ' for Graduate Employability'in 2015. The University has also invested $5m in its Graduate careers services and successful alumni are offered mentoring and bursaries to support work experience and internshis in the UK and overseas. Three-quaters of undergraduates undertake work experience as part of their course.
Birmingham currently has over 30,000 students enrolled, 5,000 of whom are international, from nearly 150 countries. The cities central location in the UK means it is easy to navigate, and Birmingham International Airport services many locations around the world.


Services for International Students

The University of Birmingham's Student Support and Counselling Service offers help and advice to students. It is staffed by a team of professionally-trained and dedicated advisers for international students who have queriesrelating to immigration, working in the Uk,healthcare, finance, personal and academic support. All services are free of charge.
The university offers an airport pickup service and runs an International Welcome Week for new international students to get to know each other and the university. During term time, Englishlanguage classes are also avialable for free.

Ranking


In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 87% of Birmingham's research was shown to have a global impact in areas such as History, Education, Chemical Engineering and Psychology. Birmingham consistently ranks in Computer Science, Dentistry, Hospitality & Tourism,Medicine and Music.

Accommodation

International students are guaranted a place in University of Birmingham accommodation for at least their first year of study. It may be possible for students to stay in University of Birmingham accommodation for the whole of their time in UK if they wish.

In halls of residence, students have their own study-bedroom but share other facilities. Breakfast and evening meals are provided in the Hall. Self- catering flats consist of five or more individual study bedrooms with a shared bathroom and kitchen. Private bathrooms are also available in some flats. There is also plenty of privately rented accommodation close to the University of Birmingham and the University of Birmingham and the University's Housing Services Office will help to explore this option.
