Established in 1967, the Department of History is among the oldest and most distinguished academic departments of the college. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to the rigorous study of history, fostering an environment where intellectual curiosity is nurtured, scholarly inquiry is encouraged, and critical perspectives are cultivated. It is a space where students are trained not only to understand the complexities of the past but also to engage thoughtfully with contemporary questions, guided by the belief that historical knowledge remains essential to responsible citizenship and informed leadership. The department offers B.A. (Honours) History and B.A. Programme courses, encouraging students to move beyond memorization of facts and delve into the analysis of historical processes. The curriculum is designed to develop interpretative skills, critical reasoning, and a nuanced appreciation of diverse cultures and societies. Field visits to the National Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art, and heritage sites...
GAATHA, the History Society of Mata Sundri College for Women, provides students with a vibrant academic platform to engage with history beyond textbooks. The society organizes a wide range of enriching activities including lectures by eminent historians, workshops, national seminars, museum visits, and field trips to archaeological and heritage sites. These initiatives promote experiential learning and a deeper understanding of historical contexts.
GAATHA is led by elected student office-bearers who manage events and activities with great enthusiasm and commitment. Students are also encouraged to take part in intra- and inter-college competitions that enhance their critical thinking and presentation skills. Alongside GAATHA, the Department has launched significant projects that add further depth to historical learning.
DHAROHAR, the Heritage Awareness Project, focuses on connecting students with India's diverse cultural legacy through mentoring sessions, heritage walks, and international seminars. It draws attention to the college's own historical setting and surrounding monuments.
AKS, the Film Appreciation Project, uses cinema as an educational tool, encouraging students to examine historical narratives, social change, and cultural memory through curated film screenings and discussions. Both projects reinforce the department’s commitment to immersive and interdisciplinary learning.
