Established in 1967, the Department of History is among the oldest and most distinguished academic departments of the college. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to the rigorous study of history, fostering an environment where intellectual curiosity is nurtured, scholarly inquiry is encouraged, and critical perspectives are cultivated. It is a space where students are trained not only to understand the complexities of the past but also to engage thoughtfully with contemporary questions, guided by the belief that historical knowledge remains essential to responsible citizenship and informed leadership. The department offers B.A. (Honours) History and B.A. Programme courses, encouraging students to move beyond memorization of facts and delve into the analysis of historical processes. The curriculum is designed to develop interpretative skills, critical reasoning, and a nuanced appreciation of diverse cultures and societies. Field visits to the National Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art, and heritage sites across Delhi complement classroom learning and offer hands-on historical exploration. The department proudly publishes its annual e-newsletter, Chronicle, first launched in 2017. Chronicle serves as a platform for students to express opinions, share creative writing, and engage with contemporary and historical issues. A structured Peer Mentoring Programme ensures that senior students guide their juniors on academic, digital, and administrative aspects of college life. The department also encourages student-led research projects, providing mentorship in research methods, historiography, and academic writing.
