The Department of Sanskrit at Mata Sundri College for Women has been a cornerstone of traditional scholarship since its establishment over 55 years ago. Dedicated to preserving India’s classical heritage, the department fosters deep engagement with Sanskrit literature, philosophy, and ancient Indian knowledge systems. It offers B.A. (Honours) Sanskrit, AECC MIL Sanskrit (Levels A, B, and C), and Sanskrit papers in the B.A. Programme. A dynamic academic environment is supported by the use of interactive teaching methodologies such as PowerPoint presentations, discussions, and Sanskrit conversation exercises. The department regularly organizes co-curricular activities under its “Gyan Vardhini Sabha,” which includes competitions like Shlokantakshari, Sanskrit Shlokavritti, dramatics, Sanskrit Chitrakarma, and educational excursions that link classical wisdom to present-day learning. Students are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary themes, as seen in collaborative events with the Punjabi and Urdu departments focusing on disappearing Indian traditions. A Sanskrit Sambhashan Workshop held in 2020 offered students practical skills in spoken Sanskrit, enhancing both confidence and fluency.
Research orientation is nurtured through paper presentations and career counselling sessions, such as one conducted by Prof. Girish Chandra Pant from Jamia Millia Islamia University. The department also runs a peer mentoring system where senior students provide academic guidance to juniors. Through a holistic blend of classical study and contemporary application, the Department of Sanskrit continues to shape culturally grounded, inquiry-driven learners.
Gyan Vardhini Sabha is the Sanskrit Department's academic and cultural society, committed to fostering a deeper understanding of Sanskrit literature and Indian philosophical traditions. The society provides students with opportunities to engage in shloka recitations, seminars, interactive lectures, and script-writing workshops.
Through its activities, Gyan Vardhini Sabha nurtures appreciation for the classical language while promoting its relevance in contemporary thought. The society also encourages students to explore interdisciplinary connections between Sanskrit texts and modern-day subjects, thus creating a holistic and enriching academic experience.
