Reclaiming Sacred Space: Historical Transformation and Urban Landscape of Mata Sundri Gurudwara from 18th century to contemporary times
Department: Department of History
Timeline: 08 May 2025 - 08 Oct 2025
This research aims to reconstruct the historical geography of Mata Sundri Gurudwara in Shahjahanabad and examine how colonial and post-colonial urban policies reshaped its surrounding landscape. It will trace the original land holdings and religious jurisdiction of the site, document the colonial acquisition and subsequent land-use changes under British and Indian administrations, and explore the erasure as well as persistence of sacred landscapes amidst urban expansion. The study will also analyze the sociopolitical factors, including legal frameworks and planning policies, that influenced these transformations, while supporting community efforts to reclaim historical rights over land and identity. In doing so, the research offers a critical case study of urban memory, heritage erosion, and the intersection of religious space and governance.
