THE ASYMPTOTE - MATHEMATICS SOCIETY

The Department has an active Mathematics Society “Asymptote” that aims to encourage intellectually stimulating atmosphere and to create self-motivated individuals by organising numerous events such as talks, seminars by eminent speakers and activities like Alumni meet, Mathematical quiz, Mathematical Rangoli, Mathematical tambola, poster Making, paper presentations and movie screening based on Mathematicians etc.

Glimpse of the events

  • Orientation: To welcome and familiarize the first-year students to college an orientation program was organized on 23rd November 2021. The event started with the college prayer followed by the welcome speech by Ms. Mandeep Walia, TIC, Department of Mathematics. The teachers of the Department introduced themselves to the students. To familiarize the students with the college, a virtual tour of the college was given to them. In the end, some useful tips about online teaching and their methods (Google Classroom and Google Meet) were discussed. Around 70 students participated in the same.

  • Fond Reverie’21: To celebrate the end of session, students of Mathematics Department organized a Finale event on 30th June, 2021. Students prepared games, and dance program. The highlight of the event was the release of the annual e-magazine of the department “Anantya: Beyond Infinity”.

  • Finale’20: The Department of Mathematics organized a Finale event on 16th June, 2020 to celebrate the end of the session. Students prepared games, and dance program. The highlight of the event was the release of the annual e-magazine of the department “Anantya: Beyond Infinity”.

  • Mastacom’20: The Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Mata Sundri College for Women, University of Delhi jointly organized the annual departmental one-day long event- MASTACOM’20 on 18th January 2020. The event commenced with a talk by Ms. Avneet Kaur entitled “Statistical Indicators for Sustainable Development Goals in India" that emphasized the role of statisticians in creating a balanced model for a nation's development. This was followed by inQUIZitive (Mathematical Quiz Competition), C++ Mania, Poster Making, Just a Minute, Treasure Hunt.

  • Mastacom’19: The Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Mata Sundri College for Women, University of Delhi jointly organized the annual departmental one-day long event- MASTACOM’19 on 19th January 2019. A talk on “Mobile Communication”, was presented by Prof. D. K. Lobiyal, Dean, School of Computer & Systems Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University and a talk titled “Problem-based learning in Mathematics”, was delivered by Prof. Shobha Bagai, Professor, Cluster Innovation Centre, University of Delhi. This was followed by MATH -∏ RATE: A MATHEMATICAL QUIZ, COOK - A – DOODLE, MATHEMATICAL TAMBOLA, MINUTE TO WIN IT,TREASURE HUNT and CLICK YOUR HUNT.

  • Alumni Meet: Many Alumni ranging from batch 2012-2017 attended the Alumni meet, on 3rd February. A cultural program was organized by the present students of all three courses which included classical dance, Xylophone performance and solo song performance. In addition to this, a powerpoint presentation show casting some pictures of the alumni from their ‘good old college days’ was shown. A skit full of giggles, gossips and satire at gender biases was performed by the students depicting the journey at a women’s college, highlighting experiences that one encounters there. Alumni shared their experiences as well as interesting moments of campus life and their plans for the future.

  • Mastacom’18: Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Mata Sundri College for Women, University of Delhi jointly organized the annual departmental one-day long event- Mastacom’18 on 21st February 2018. A talk on “Career Opportunities and Prospects in Mathematical Sciences”, was presented by Dr. Babita Goel, Associate Professor, Ramjas College, DU and a talk on “Decision making using Data Sciences” was delivered by Mr. Vibhor Gupta, Founder and Director -at Weekendr and Mobiquel. This was followed by skill based and fun activities namely Play a Gig, Q-Fiesta, JAM, Treasure Hunt, Doodle Battle and Click your hunt.

  • Finale’19: To celebrate the end of session, the students of the Mathematics Department organized a Finale event on 9th April 2018. Students prepared games, and a dance program. The highlight of the event was the release of the annual e-magazine of the department “Anantya: Beyond Infinity”.

  • The mathematics society “Asymptote” organized an inter college workshop, “The World Within Reach” on 3rd February 2017. The workshop had been planned incorporating two interactive sessions – "Spreading Your Wings" and "Success @Interviews". The workshop was then followed by an inter-college Mathematical Rangoli Competition.

  • Alumni Meet: The Department of Mathematics organized the departmental Alumni Meet on 14th January 2017 wherein distinguished guests Dr. Manmohan Kaur, Principal of SGND Khalsa College along with Dr. Shashi Kiran, Retired Faculty Member graced the occasion.

  • Mathemania: A paper presentation competition, poster making competition, followed by sudoku competition was organized by the Department under Mathemania on 19th September 2016.
