The roots of our subject Punjabi literature consists of healthy base, progressive principles and dynamic literary works opening a myriad of metaphysical thoughts, cosmic awareness, thought system, human behaviour and value system, lifestyle, cultural ethics, social needs, historical conditions, psychological formations, philosophical understandings, aesthetical-artistic interests which dialects the rich plethora and tradition of Punjabi literature.
After partition, millions of Punjabi people migrated in Delhi rapidly, concurrently diasporic people established this college and Punjabi department in 1967 to expand the growth in language, history, religion, culture and traditions highlighting its own magnificent history. Smt. Inder Kaur was the first privileged founder Head of this Department. Other faculty members were Mrs. Pukhraj Kaur Johal, Mrs. Sudarshan Kaur Paul, Dr. Mohinder Kaur Gill (Former Principal and Eminent Sikh Scholar), Mrs. Sukhjit Kaur, Dr. Rajinder Kaur, Dr. Tejinder Kaur, Dr. Harjinder Kaur and Mrs. Amarjit Kaur.
To keep in pace with the present times, faculty members of Punjabi Department are actively engaged in research projects and have published good number of research papers in the reputed journals. Faculty members are also dedicated to impart superior and improved quality education and Research opportunities History of Punjabi Literature, History of Punjabi Language, Linguistics, Medieval Literature (Gurmat Studies, Sufi Literature, Quissakari, Punjabi Balled), Punjabi Novel, Short Story, Punjabi Narrative, Punjabi Drama, Cultural Study & Punjabi Culture, Translation and New Research Methodology to their students as per the requirement.

The students are required to attend not less than 68% of the lectures during each semester in order to enable them to appear for university examinations.
A continuous process of internal assessment takes place during each semester. The assessing procedures usually include written assignments, projects, house exam and presentations. Final examinations are held in the month of November and May.
It is mandatory for a student to secure minimum 40% marks in each theory paper during final examinations, 40% in the internal assessment for each semester, to pass the examination.
