E-Journal VOICE

Faculty Editors: Dr. Shashwati & Dr. Paromita Datta

Launched in the year 2016 – 17, ‘VOICE‟ is an avenue to connect flowing thoughts by way of putting together the aspirations and artistic expressions of the students. It is an attempt aimed at providing not only an intellectual but a comprehensive and holistic platform for the students to voice their views pertaining to larger issues of society, environment, policies and the world at large. The journal is a platform for the students to voice their creativity and freedom of expression– about various facets of society, as well as to question set patterns and, in the bargain, contribute towards building a new society through essays, poems, articles, political cartoons, satire, and interviews.

The very first issue was an effort to commemorate 70 years of Indian democracy as well as it was a tribute to the Golden jubilee year of this esteemed institution. If the first issue had a lofty aim, the Second issue in November 2017 was not far behind and was dedicated to women who created history. There, is no denying that gender and popular culture intersect at odd angles and create enough room to engage in serious deliberation. While working on the second issue pertaining to women empowerment, the students had conducted an interview with the Former Mayor of Delhi and the argument that finally carried the day was - „Gender is a fluid category and can be reshaped through persistent questioning and participative actions.‟
The Third issue centers on the question of climate change and environment, an issue which is probably concerned with each and every life on this planet, calling for urgent attention, response and action, both at the national and global levels. The issues of environment and climate change are significant political questions. They have deep connections with the way a neoliberal and hyper-consumerist development is being organized at the global level and the subsequent power relation unravelling between the global North and the global South.

The fourth issue focuses on the discipline of international relations, the current issue of the „Voice‟ includes a set of essays ranging on relevant international issues such as the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, the deteriorating relations between the US and Iran, the Yellow Vest movement in France, the Hong-Kong crisis, global terrorism, and world climate change. The fifth issue titled “Spectre of the Pandemic” brought forth the impact of Covid 19 in India. The lockdown imposed by the Government of India in the 3rd week of March 2020 brought lives to a standstill for numerous people and turned the world upside down for the significant others. This marked the beginning of the „new normal‟, which made masks, soaps, sanitisers and social distancing the most important skincare and healthcare regimens. The lockdown saw many upheavals in the form of migrant labour, the failing healthcare system and the commercialisation of life saving mechanisms in the trying and testing times of the pandemic.

The Department E-journal is an eclectic amalgamation of articles, essays, poetry, cartoons, political satire and the like. Besides, the journal also reflects upon the activities undertaken by the department. It is a creative platform where the students can express their ideas on a plethora of issues as well as it is a humble attempt to impart training in methodologies of doing research.
The editing team comprising of a few students and teachers, are engaged throughout the year. Visiting places of public importance, conducting interviews, undertaking environment friendly drives, raising questions about set patterns- an attempt is made towards constructive social change.
