Bachelor of Elementary Education (B. El. Ed.) is a four-year integrated professional degree program offered by the University of Delhi. The programme provides holistic education to create well prepared elementary school teachers. A bi-lingual and multi-disciplinary program, B.El.Ed. integrates the study of subject and pedagogical knowledge, human development and communication skills. Both professional and academic options are available to the students who graduate with a B. El. Ed. degree. Despite being the youngest Department amongst all the eight colleges offering B. El. Ed. programme, the Department of Elementary Education at Mata Sundri College has successfully established and strengthened itself ever since it started in 2007.
Apart from the regular courses under purview of the program, including foundation papers, core papers, liberal option papers and the practical components comprising of theatre, craft, self-development workshops and intense school internship, we also provide academic enrichment through workshops, talks, visits, discussions, film and documentary screenings in each academic session. The department organised a weeklong Online Faculty Development Programme on “Teacher, Teaching and Teacher Education: Processes, Concerns and Prospects” in collaboration with IQAC, Mata Sundri College and TLC, Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidhyalaya, Sagar (M.P.) from 18th-23rd October, 2020. The FDP aimed to establish and evolve a dialogue among professionals, practitioners, academicians and policy makers to develop a comprehensive understanding of the National Education Policy, 2020. It also aimed to synthesize an interdisciplinary understanding that would emerge through weaving different strands of Teacher Education, whether related to the discipline of Education or the Liberal Subjects.
A well-equipped curriculum lab is available for the students, which has the basic infrastructure and facilities for conducting Science experiments, Maths activities as well as art and craft workshops.
The department has an active placement cell and most of the B.El.Ed alumni have been successfully placed through campus placements in reputed schools and organisations. The cell also invites faculty from academically acclaimed higher education institutions. Many of our students are pursuing post-graduation and research in various disciplines. We also publish an annual newsletter ‘Aalekh’ that is accessible on the college website. It comprises articles by students and faculty and records of all the activities undertaken by the Department.

Both the students and teachers actively contribute articles, poetry and pictures for the newsletter. It offers a glimpse into the views and voices of its contributors and also carries a vivid account of the activities, events and achievements of the department spread throughout the academic year.
